Pilot Places 2nd in Arizona Ultralight Air Race

SPRING,TEXAS: John Dyer, a Continential Airlines pilot and owner of a local ultralight dealership, won 2nd place during the 3rd Annual Greater Arizona Ultralight Air Race, January 16th in Phoenix. The 106 mile closed course endurance race drew 124 entries in five classes, from the United States and Europe. Dyer flew a stock model Vector 610 ultralight and completed the race in 2 hours 19 minutes for an average speed of 45.8mph. No official pit stops were recorded, however one of the 14 laps flown was 45 seconds longer than the others. Dyer explained "There was an unexpected call to nature that probably cost us first place." As for the safety of flying ultralights, "....as in this endurance race it was the human element that essentially failed. The machine flew perfectly."
